Early Life and Education
Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He was the son of two devout Baptist farmers. Carter attended Emory University and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. He served as a submarine officer for seven years.
Political Career
Carter entered politics in 1962 when he was elected to the Georgia State Senate. He served as governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. In 1976, Carter was elected president of the United States.
